Applied AI Literacy for All
Applied AI Literacy for All Course
Equip your students with the applied AI skills the future of work demands
The DEC Applied AI Literacy for All Course takes students beyond AI awareness into working knowledge. Apart from introducing AI agents and related workflows, it moves from knowing what AI can do to thinking with it, covering AI as a reasoning partner, practical application to real-world tasks, and the research and ethical judgment skills needed to use it responsibly.
Building on foundational AI literacy skills, this course is suitable for students of any discipline and is designed to be fully scalable so all your students can participate.

How students will benefit
This course takes AI literacy beyond the fundamentals, equipping students with the applied skills and practical frameworks needed to work with AI confidently and responsibly across academic and professional contexts.
Here are some key takeaways:
Use AI as a thinking and reasoning partner
Develop metacognitive skills to plan and evaluate your work alongside AI, building the cognitive independence needed for today's professional landscape.
Understand and work with AI agents
Explore how agentic AI systems and intelligent automation work, and gain the practical knowledge to design and manage them in real-world workflows.
Strengthen your career potential with applied AI skills

Course Curriculum
01
The Impact of AI on Industry and Workforce
Drawing on the AI Skills Opportunity Map, a Google.org-engaged global research initiative by the Digital Education Council, this module gives students a grounded, evidence-based understanding of how AI is landing across industries and what this means for their careers. Students will examine the three dominant patterns of AI impact — augmentation, automation, and human-led work — explore how professional skills are evolving across four adaptation profiles, and grapple with the productivity paradox: why AI often reduces performance before it improves it, and what it takes to avoid that trap.
Key Takeaways:
✔ Understand the three patterns of AI's impact on work — augmentation, automation, and human-led tasks.
✔ Identify how skills in your field are expanding, being redefined, or remaining stable, and what this means for how you invest in your own learning
✔ Recognise the importance of applied AI skills and enduring human capabilities.
02
AI as Learning and Thinking Partner: Building Meta-cognition
AI works best when you treat it as a thinking partner, not just an answer machine. This module introduces the concept of metacognition and how to harness AI to sharpen, not replace, your thinking. Students will explore the AI–Human Thinking Loop, practice applying AI across the planning, monitoring, and evaluation stages of their work, and develop the cognitive independence essential for today's professional landscape.
Key Takeaways:
✔ Understand metacognition and how it applies to AI-assisted learning and work.
✔ Apply the metacognitive cycle — planning, monitoring, and evaluating.
✔ Use AI as a thinking and reasoning partner across different use cases while preserving independent judgment.
03
Agents & Intelligent Automation
AI agents are rapidly reshaping how organisations operate. This module unpacks the four types of AI systems and examines how they reason and act autonomously. Through real-world case studies and workplace scenarios, students will learn how to manage and responsibly deploy agentic AI, and understand what it means for the future of work.
Key Takeaways:
✔ Distinguish between AI assistants, AI workflows, AI agents, and agentic systems.
✔ Understand how AI agents use planning, tool use, and memory to complete complex tasks.
✔ Identify the key risks of agentic AI and apply responsible management practices.
04
The AI Productivity Playbook
Knowing how to use AI effectively is one of the most in-demand skills in today's workforce. This module gives students a practical framework for boosting productivity, from streamlining repetitive tasks to amplifying higher-order thinking through cognitive leverage. With hands-on demos and real industry examples from organisations like DBS, Siemens, and Walmart, students will build an AI productivity strategy they can apply from day one.
Key Takeaways:
✔ Automate routine, administrative tasks using AI to free up capacity for higher-value work.
✔ Leverage AI for ideation, analysis, and synthesis to enhance cognitive performance and output quality.
✔ Design efficient AI-assisted workflows with the right human checkpoints for accountability and quality.
05
Research & Ethical Reasoning
Using AI in research comes with both opportunity and responsibility. This module explores how AI can accelerate research through literature scanning, summarisation, hypothesis generation, and data exploration while addressing the ethical risks that come with it. Students will apply the RAIT framework to navigate data confidentiality and transparency, ensuring their AI-assisted work meets the highest standards of integrity.
Key Takeaways:
✔ Apply AI effectively across research tasks including literature scanning, summarisation, and data exploration.
✔ Manage confidentiality, data sensitivity, and originality when using AI in academic and professional research.
✔ Use the RAIT framework to ensure ethical reasoning in AI-assisted research.
